Tasmania has lost one of its more wily and most effective local government leaders with the passing of West Coast Mayor Darryl Gerrity.
“It was always great fun working with Darryl as I had the opportunity to do in local government and as a federal representative,” Senator Richard Colbeck said.
“His great wit and capacity to deliver a memorable line in support of his region and community gave Darryl the capacity to put a very effective burr under your saddle when he thought it was needed.”
“He was a great sparring partner and more often than not he would have a chuckle with you about winding you up after he had made his point.”
“He always got his point across and you were never left in any doubt as to what he was after.”
Senator Colbeck said Tasmania wouldn’t quite be the same without Mayor Gerrity.
Senator Colbeck expressed his deepest sympathies to Darryl’s wife Robyn, his family and to the West Coast community.

Hanson Young is evil in the sense of personally ambitious without regard to a common belief structure that sustains a movement. She will turn the greens into the democrats overnight ie a political wasteland.
I loathe politicians who have no life or reason for existence beyond politics. Hanson-Young is one. They are doubly dangerous. Helpful when required, and duplicitous once success has been achieved.
God help Christine. I doubt she will be able to consolidate a fracturing party.

West Coast Mayor Darryl Gerrity was undoubtedly the greatest advocate the west Coast had today. He was fearless in his never-ending struggle to obtain an equilibrium that would best benefit his beloved region. Never one to shirk an issue, his penchant for everything West Coast often brought him into conflict with others less affectionate for the advancement of the province. Had Darryl lived back in the 1920’s, he no doubt would have been a leading advocate for the construction of the West Coast Road, the link that was to eventually end the isolation of ‘The Lost Province’ and bequeath the region its true status in Tasmanian affairs.
I personally found Darryl an extremely interesting person to converse with; his intelligence and wit made it a pleasure to swap notes with him on his favourite topic. I will miss him greatly, as no doubt will many others, and it is likely we may never see his equal again. My sincere sympathy to his wife and family on their sad loss.

A damn nice bloke was Darryl, only met him a couple of times but enjoyed his company, even though we differed on some policy direction, he was down to earth, trustworthy and listened to people, unlike 99% of those in the political system.
