This years’ National PMAA will be held during the National Conference Gala Dinner on 15 October at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, WA. This awards ceremony will be attended by top industry organisations and representatives in order to recognise outstanding achievements and commitment to improving project and program management capability, at an organisational and individual level.
The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) established the Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) program to recognise, honour and promote outstanding achievements in program and project management around Australia.
There are two classifications of awards
1. Awards for the management of projects.
2. Awards for individual project management achievement.
The PMAA has two levels
1. Chapter Level: Winners are selected in each Australian State and Territory.
2. National Level: State and Territory winners are judged for the National Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA).
Over the months of August and September, the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) announced the Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) winners for each State and Territory. Winners of all project and individual categories from each Chapter have been elevated as finalists to the National PMAA.
The National winners of the PMAA, including Project of the Year, Category winners and Project Director of the Year, Project Manager of the Year and Team Member of the Year will be announced at the National Conference Gala Dinner on 15 October at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, WA.
In the running for this years’ top awards include; Telstra, Qantas, Sitzler, Sinclair Knight Merz and the Department of Defence.

BACKGROUND ON SPEAKERS
DR KEITH SUTER
Since moving to Australia from London in 1973, Dr Keith Suter is working towards a third doctorate, already achieving doctorates in international law of guerrilla warfare and the social and economic consequences of the arms race.
He has been appointed to many prestigious roles throughout his career, including Chairperson of the International Humanitarian Law Committee of Australian Red Cross (NSW), Chairperson of the International Commission of Jurists (NSW), Director of Studies at the International Law Association (Australian Branch) and Managing Director of the Global Directions think tank.
In 1999, Keith was made a Life Member of the United Nations Association of Australia in recognition of his service. At various times from 1978 to 1999, he served as the National President of the organisation and took on the roles of the WA and NSW State President. He has also been a member of the prestigious Club of Rome that shares a common concern for the future of humanity and the planet. This exclusive club has only 100 members, with Mikhail Gorbachev amongst them.
Keith was the President of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (1991-1998) at the University of Sydney, and was a Consultant on Social Policy with the Wesley Mission’s for 17 years. In addition, he served as a consultant for a number of other organisations, with a focus on local and international issues.
He is also an active member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and his activities include conducting monthly webcasts with business leaders. He frequently appears on radio and television discussing politics and international affairs.
Amongst Keith’s many books are “All about Terrorism: Everything you were afraid to ask” and “Global Order and Global Disorder: Globalization and the Nation-State” and “50 Things You Want to Know About World Issues…But Were Too Afraid to Ask”.
Keith is a highly experienced, professional and awarded presenter of ideas, with topics including ethics, world affairs, globalisation, mining, global warming, leadership, the future, and corporate governance. Engaging in style, Keith’s discussions are always very topical and audience-specific.
ED MERROW
Ed Merrow is the President and CEO of Independent Project Analysis, Inc. (IPA), the global industry leader in quantitative analysis of project management systems and the preeminent consultancy in project evaluation and project system benchmarking.
After receiving degrees from Dartmouth College and Princeton University, Merrow began his career as an Assistant Professor at UCLA, followed by 14 years directing the Rand Corporation’s Energy Policy Program.
He is a recognised expert on the development and execution of large and complex megaprojects, having spent decades conducting research on the unique challenges of these complex investments. Merrow’s pioneering research has culminated in the publication of his latest work, Industrial Megaprojects—Concepts, Strategies, and Practices for Success (John Wiley & Sons, April 2011).
LAURICE TEMPLE
Laurice Temple is a senior executive who comes with a vast amount of global experience on major infrastructure projects. She has a strong strategic background and a wealth of experience when dealing with diverse multi-cultural teams. She has worked on the construction of manufacturing plants, airports and rail, to name a few, in the United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Australia.
As the current Project Services Manager at BP in the Asset Management Leadership Team, Laurice is in charge of developing and implementing the new Project Services team. Her team portfolio includes Project Controls, Contracts Management, People Capability, Change and Continuous Improvement, Property and Office Facilities, Project Management Systems, and Governance and Project Risk.
Laurice is also the current past president of NAWIC Victoria /Tasmania President which is currently partnered with AIPM with the mentoring program and International Women’s Day events in Victoria.
TANSEL ALI
Tansel Ali is a two-time Australian Memory Champion and has recently memorised the Yellow Pages phone book in only 24 days. He has broken a number of memory records and competed in the World Memory Championships in Malaysia where he was crowned ‘Grandmaster of Memory’ for remembering a random shuffled deck of cards in under three minutes. At the same event he also broke five national memory records for a total of 6 out of 10 events.
Tansel has spent the last 10 years assisting organisations to save time and money by showing unique memory strategies to become more creative, innovative and entrepreneurial. He has regularly featured on television, radio, print, and online and enjoys revealing the secrets and strategies to his success.
His App “The 4 Most Powerful Memory Techniques” has been number one hit in several countries and downloaded over 70,000 times around the world. He is currently writing a book on memory titled “The Yellow Elephant” (April 2013, Hardie Grant Publishing), was a finalist in the 2006 Australian Muslim Achievement Awards for Role Model of the Year and has 12 years’ experience in IT and training.
ROSS HOLT
Ross Holt is a leader in Western Australia’ property industry with more than two decades’ experience in the sector. As LandCorp Chief Executive for the past 20 years, he is one of the most informed people regarding regional planning, development and growth, housing affordability and sustainability, land availability and population density, land management practices, town planning processes and community development initiatives and infrastructure needs.
During his stewardship of LandCorp, the organisation’s operation has grown to include more than 180 projects with more than 200 professionals. Today, the group works with all levels of Government and various private sector entities to manage more than 180 significant regional development schemes at any one time.
Ross is a key player in and contributor to a number of regional strategies including Joondalup City Centre, Pilbara Cities, Australian Marine Complex, Western Trade Coast, Regional Development Assistance Program (RDAP) and Mandurah Ocean Marina.
JIM WHALLEY
Jim Whalley is the CEO and co-founder of the Nova Group and former RAAF fighter and test pilot. The group has over 300 staff and specialises in defence, also operating in areas of space, satellite communications, health care, utilities and rail where its expertise in systems engineering, safety and the implementation of project management.
The majority of personnel at Nova are former military with post graduate qualifications in areas ranging from flight test and explosive ordnance to project management and satellite communications.
Jim is a Board Member (and Deputy Chair) of The Repat Foundation, a member of the University of Adelaide Business School Advisory Council, the Federal Government Defence Industry Innovation Centre Advisory Committee, the Sir Ross and Keith Smith Advisory Committee and the Ai Group Defence Council National Executive and a former chair of the South Australian Defence Teaming Centre (DTC).
KIERAN KINSELLA
Kieran was appointed to the position of CEO of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority in June 2012. Kieran will play a central role in the transformation and renewal of the metropolitan area with projects from Elizabeth Quay, Perth City Link and Riverside, to the continued redevelopment of Midland, Armadale and Subiaco. Kieran comes to the role after serving as CEO of the Midland Redevelopment Authority for 11 years, where he led the revitalisation of Midland as a strategic regional centre.
Prior to this, Kieran held the role of Project Director at the WA Tourism Commission where he oversaw the delivery of major projects on the North West Cape. Other recent senior management positions included serving a secondment to the Commonwealth Government as the Western Divisional Manager for the Indigenous Land Corporation and a 6 year term as the inaugural Director of the Gascoyne Development Commission.
Over the last 25 years he has gained extensive senior management experience in both the Federal and State Government public services in a wide range of disciplines including urban renewal, statutory planning, economic and community development, strategic and regional planning, regional development and employment and training.
SUZANNE TINDAL
Suzanne joined the Commonwealth Bank in 2007 before joining Bankwest in 2012 as Chief Executive and the public face of Bankwest. Sue led Bankwest through the transition from a wholly owned subsidiary, to become a Division of CBA. Sue guided Bankwest through several other challenges including the Senate Inquiry into the Banking Sector Post GFC, with key stakeholders including the Government of Western Australia and other Federal Regulators.
Sue has a wealth of international experience in the financial services, energy and IT sectors having held numerous senior or Chief Executive roles in New Zealand, Australia, Asia and the USA during the last 20 years.
In the financial sector, Sue led the Global Transaction Banking Group of another major Australian bank with responsibility for a number of ASX 200 listed entities, until moving on to the Chief Operating Officer in Asia. As the holder of the banking licences in a number of Asian countries, Sue was responsible for all activities undertaken in several geographies involving functions such as Strategy, Human Resources, Treasury, Finance, Compliance and Operational Risk.
Sue accepted the role of Executive Vice President, Global Trade and Transactional Banking and led the expansion of CBA’s capabilities across Asia and into Europe.
