Moonah Arts Centre’s popular 2013 Friday Night Concert Series continues on Friday September 27 with The Steve Young Trio presenting:
“The Piano Has Been Drinking…(Not Me)”— A tribute to the legendary Tom Waits
Steve Young returns to the Moonah Arts Centre Friday 27th September to perform an evening of Tom Waits’ music.
One time State-side, now local jazz Pianist and Singer, Steve Young offers soulful renderings of Waits’ songs with an imaginative sense of theatre, cool jazz, grizzled blues, and dark poetic ballads.
Tom Waits has created an aural universe through 24 albums spanning a 40 year career; all the while, transforming his song-writing and persona according to his own whims. He evokes the feel and sounds of the past, yet is contemporary and timeless at the same time.
Waits stands alone, yet evokes a who’s who of literary figures – Kerouac, Bukowski, Mark Twain – as well as the music of Louis Armstrong, Lead Belly, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Kurt Weill, Brecht, folk legends and jazz heroes. Like Bob Dylan, he is one of American music’s great mysteries.
Wait’s unique singing voice has been described by critic Daniel Durcholz as being “soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car.” He evokes such raw, undiluted emotion but when he sings his more “mainstream” songs, especially in a jazz style, his voice is rolling, gravelly and deep – the unmistakable Tom Waits’ sound.
The one hour concert promises to be a journey of vivid imagery and powerful emotion. There’s something for everyone, from diehard Waits’ fans to the curious newcomer.
Steve Young will be joined by Isaac Gee on Double Bass, Ben Brinkhoff on guitar, with a special guest …or two on the menu.
