Rodney Croome of the Gay and Lesbian Rights group is in another world if he believes the public embraced same-sex marriage at the federal election.
Former Labor Prime Minister Rudd made re-defining marriage a central issue of the campaign and this was supported by the Greens with an aggressive campaign by the gay lobby. The Labor vote plummeted to its lowest primary vote in 100 years and the Green vote halved. Pro-marriage candidates were elected in a majority of lower house seats.
The Liberal policy to uphold marriage as being between a man and woman is appreciated. We congratulate the newly elected federal government on its victory and commitment to defend marriage.
The focus on same-sex marriage during the federal election confirms marriage is a federal issue and we call on the Tasmanian Labor/Green government to take the message and cease any efforts to make it a legislative priority in State Parliament.
Marriage is a cornerstone of family life, a foundation of strong and stable societies and an umbrella under which children can be nurtured and flourish. The Save Marriage Coalition will continue its work to protect and promote marriage and to stand up for the right of a child to both a mum and a dad.
