Festival to open with Robert Redford’s All is Lost (above), collaborate with TEDx and focus on women directors
All is Lost
1 October, 2013: The fourth Tasmanian BOFA Film Festival was officially launched today in Hobart by international award winning Tasmanian director of Manganinnie, John Honey and BOFA Festival Director Owen Tilbury. Taking place from November 7-10 at the Inveresk Precinct in Launceston, the festival is an integral part of the Tasmanian cultural landscape and a significant player in Australia’s national film festival circuit.
This year’s festival highlights include:
All is Lost directed by JC Chandor with Robert Redford as lead actor: BOFA brings this highly anticipated film that premiered in Cannes Film Festival (receiving a standing ovation) to Tasmanian audiences, prior to its commercial release in theatres nationwide next year.
A focus on women directors: Honouring the increasing representation of female directors in the industry, more than one third of BOFA’s line-up will showcase films from women directors. This includes the first ever film to be directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia (Wadjda) and Tasmania’s very own Heather Kirkpatrick (director of Mary meets Mohammed).
56 screenings: This includes 19 of the world’s best feature films and 20 of the world’s best documentaries – all centred on the premises of entertainment and screen-based story telling that inspires positive change.
TEDx at BOFA: A festival with conscience, Launceston TEDx is running in parallel with BOFA’s Tasmania Action Day bringing speakers from around Tasmania on the subject of “Inspire, Collaborate, Act”.
Tasmania Screen Industry Day: Fostering and promoting screen production in Tasmania, on Saturday there will be masterclasses, workshops and Q&A’s with directors/producers, exploring opportunities in the digital world, low budget feature film making, crowdfunding and acting. Some of the country’s leading screen industry talent will gather to offer insights, advice and guidance to film enthusiasts and the general public, including Amy Nelson (AWGIE Award winning producer of digital content for the ABC) and experienced screen actor Aaron Pedersen TBC (Mystery Road, Jack Irish, City Homicide, Secret Life of Us).
“Screen Culture” photography exhibition at QVMAG: The exhibition will feature stills from Delly Carr, one of Australia’s leading photographers who recently showcased his work in VIVID Sydney
The Big Picture Debate: Two teams of outstanding speakers will debate “Our screen addiction is destroying us”, hosted by Simon Longstaff of the St James Ethics Centre, Sydney.
Parties: Opening Night Cannes Glam Party (Thursday 7th November), BOFA Food, Wine ‘n’ Film dinner (Saturday 9th November) and Closing Night party (Sunday 10th November).
Drive-in cinema: For the first time, BOFA has collaborated with Launceston Country Club to recreate the drive-in experience of the 50’s. For a night of good old fashioned movie fun, families and friends can enjoy four Australian classics- Happy Feet, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Red Dog and Mad Max 2.
“We are proud to curate a festival that reflects global talent, films and creativity right here in Tasmania. The fact that we can showcase a film such as All is Lost which received critical acclaim in Cannes recently and involve international brands such as TEDx is testament to BOFA’s growing acceptance as a significant player on the Australian and international film festival circuit,” said Owen Tilbury, Festival Director of BOFA.
