Supporters of the Tasmanian Centre for Global Learning will be able to claim a tax deduction for their donations under a re-elected Rudd Labor Government, Senator Catryna Bilyk, Senator for Tasmania, announced recently.

“A re-elected Rudd Labor Government would specifically name the Tasmanian Centre for Global Learning as a deductible gift recipient in the tax laws, enabling taxpayers to claim a tax deduction for donations above $2,” Senator Bilyk said.

Senator Bilyk said the Tasmanian Centre for Global Learning was an important organisation that empowers the Tasmanian community and schools to take action to advance peace, sustainability and social justice.

Joining Senator Bilyk at the announcement, Labor candidate for Denison Jane Austin praised the work of the Centre.

“The Tasmanian Centre for Global Learning plays an important role in Tasmania by working to promote social justice and a sustainable world future,” Ms Austin said.

“Their flagship programs, ruMAD? and the Fairer World Festival have helped to educate and empower thousands of primary and secondary school students to make a real and lasting difference in their local communities and the global community.”

Senator Bilyk said she had worked hard to secure the commitment and thanked her Tasmanian Labor Senate colleagues who had also written in support of the Centre.

“The Liberals really need to state whether they will match this, and make it clear whether they support the Centre and the work it does.”
Centre Co-ordinator, Helen Hortle, said their new status would make a big difference for the Centre in continuing their educational programs as it would provide donors with an added incentive to support this important work.

“We appreciate the long-term support of Senator Bilyk’s office and Federal Labor and the value they place on promoting human rights education,” Ms Hortle said.

Funding for this commitment was reported in the Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Outlook.
