Why is Adams surprised that Lyons Mayors upset?
“Most of the Lyons electorate missed out on federal funds to support the communities impacted by the forest industry closure,” said Mr Eric Hutchinson Federal Liberal candidate for Lyons today.
“Lyons is the forgotten electorate in Tasmania. There is a desperate need for jobs and development in these communities. They are hurting from the closure of the forest industry and many of these communities have received nothing in return. It is a cruel hoax on the families and communities left behind.
“Worse, however, is that these communities have been neglected by their federal member of Parliament who has expressed surprise when the relevant Mayors protested the lack of funding support for their area.
“The federal member also said that the funding could have been “wasted”. Does he mean the funds could have been wasted if spent in these communities which are crying out for jobs and development? Why is it that these funds have been spent in inner city suburbs and not the rural and regional communities so hardly done over by the forest lock ups and closure of the timber industry?” Mr Hutchinson asked.
“The Labor-Green experiment has taken a terrible toll throughout the regional and rural parts of Tasmania, especially in Lyons. “It is time, after 20 years, that rural and regional Tasmania had someone who was prepared to stand up for them and be counted.
“ I will be working every day till 7 September, to advocate for a change for the better in Lyons, Mr Hutchinson concluded.
“The Coalition has a plan to Boost Employment in Tasmania, which was released yesterday. We will establish a trial jobs program to turbo-charge the abysmal jobs market. We will reduce the cost of doing business in Tasmania to grow business and grow jobs,” Mr Hutchinson said.
Mr Hutchinson was joined today in expressing these views by the Mayor of Derwent Valley Council, Martyn Evans.
Mayors Deidre Flint from Central Highlands Council and Sarah Schmerl from Break O’Day Council – in the Lyons electorate – have also publicly stated their concern.
