Vastly improved bicycle pathways and bike friendly areas must be a priority for Denison, according to Greens Candidate for Denison Anna Reynolds.
“As part of a Greens team in the federal parliament I will advocate for the establishment of the $80 million a year bike infrastructure fund,” Ms Reynolds said.
“I will be a strong voice in our parliament and local media for the development of the Sandy Bay Cycleway and the Battery Point Promenade, the Derwent Park path and the extension of the Inner City Cycleway and Main Road bike lanes to Granton.”
Ms Reynolds took part in Bicycle Tasmania’s e-bike tour of Hobart this morning to show her support.
“My campaign vehicle has been an e-bike and though I’ve always been a bike rider, using it for my campaign has made me highly aware of just how bike unfriendly Denison is,” Ms Reynolds said.
“Car is king throughout the electorate. And although Hobart City, Glenorchy City and Kingborough Councils have all attempted to do their bit, a significant investment from the Federal Government is required.”
“Healthy cities are not only bike friendly – they encourage and reward citizens for cycling instead of driving.”
Ms Reynolds said the Greens would spend $80 Million a year on bike infrastructure.
“The Greens want to see more bicycle infrastructure, and will introduce a permanent National Bike Paths Projects program with an annual budget of $80 million. The program will be able to fund best practise bike infrastructure in Tasmania,” she said.
“Cyclists and high speed motorised traffic just don’t mix and cyclists are fed up with being endangered and ignored.
“The Greens also support initiatives such as building safe bike routes to schools, to get kids riding early and keeping them riding throughout their life. We support better co-ordination with other public transport infrastructure, bike hire schemes and education and promotion programs to encourage riding.”
