The Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim MP today said that the Federal Court’s decision to uphold an appeal against a proposed mine at Nelson Bay River was good news for the Tarkine, and the endangered species that reside there.

“The belief that ploughing new roads and open cut mines into this pristine area is the solution to long-term unemployment in Tasmania is just simplistic, naive and politically motivated.”

“The mine would have a very short lifespan of just a few years, it would leave behind a terrible environmental legacy, and there are not even any guarantees that it would a significant number of locals.”

“It is a beautiful part of Tasmania, and if there is one thing that would kickstart economic development in the north-west Tasmania, it’s an iconic environmental attraction to bring visitors to the area.”

“Remember that the Australian Heritage Council has recommended that the Tarkine be protected for its outstanding natural and carbon sequestration values.”
