The Great Southern Beanie Festival will open today at the Huon Valley Environment Centre, with more than 200 beanies on display.
A community art based initiative by the volunteers at the Huon Valley Environment Centre, the second annual Great Southern Beanie Festival is a showcase of an essential winter item, beanies in many colours, crochets, knits and designs.
“We have many people, young and old, who have supported the Huon Valley Environment Centre through their craft, who have contributed hand made beanies to this arts project. We look forward to this festival growing every year,” Jenny Weber, Huon Valley Environment Centre’s spokesperson said.
“The idea for this festival is inspired by the Alice Springs Beanie festival, where the concept of the humble and practical head wear is elevated to an art form. Our environment centre promotes community based involvement in the arts through this Great Southern Beanie Festival and exhibiting the hand made textiles, winter warmers,” Jenny Weber said.
The Great Southern Beanie festival is a mid-winter fundraiser for the Huon Valley Environment Centre. Beanies are on display at the environment centre until 10 August. At 2pm today, the launch event will be held at the environment centre today with live music.
