Franklin River: 30th anniversary celebrations 4

Dear Friend,

In the early 1980s, over six thousand peaceful protesters came from across the globe to protect the Franklin River. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the High Court ruling that protected this spectacular and wild place, and you are invited to a special event to commemorate the campaign and celebrate the positive contribution conservation has made to Tasmania.

The night will include complimentary drinks, cash bar and canapés and a great line up of speakers and musicians including Dr Bob Brown, Christine Milne, Lisa Yeates, Phil Cushing, Geoff Law, Jill McCulloch, Alice Hungerford and other Franklin campaigners, Shane Howard (Goanna), Brian Ritchie (MoFo Curator & Violent Femmes), Luke Martin (Tourism Industry Council Tasmania), Ros Harvey (founding Director of Sense-T), critically acclaimed string quartet FourPlay, Elfa, The Kookaburra Quintet and more.

It’s interesting to reflect that in 2008, for the 25th anniversary, many of the campaigners came together for a big party in Tasmania and were joined in the merriment by some of the police and dignitaries who had not only opposed but arrested them. Many laughs were had about old times that night and no one was in doubt that the outcome had been a good one for Tasmania.

We hope you can join us for this spectacular evening of music, inspiration and celebration!

Yours sincerely,

Senator Peter Whish-Wilson

About the event organisers: On 14 December 2012, I went to the Upriver Reunion. When I came back I was inspired to organise a 30th anniversary celebration of the high court ruling that protected the Franklin River. I contacted some of the performing artists and together we’ve organised this event to bring people together and celebrate.
