A chart of the proportion of same-sex couples in each state and territory
According to the Census, Tasmania now has proportionally more same-sex couples than some other states, compared to previous Censuses when the figure was the lowest in the nation.
Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said,
“Ever since the Census began recording same-sex relationships in 1996, Tasmania has had the lowest proportion of same-sex couples in Australia, but now that has changed.”
“Tasmania now has a higher proportion of same-sex couples than West Australia and a higher proportion of male couples than South Australia.”
“This leap is because of how quickly Tasmania has gone from having the worst laws and attitudes on same-sex relationships to having some of the best.”
“What we are seeing is a combination of Tasmanian same-sex partners staying in the state, others moving here from interstate, and couples feeling more confident to indicate their relationship on the Census.”
The ACT has the highest proportion of same-sex couples compared to opposite-sex couples, followed by NSW, Victoria, the Northern Territory and Queensland.
