ALARM AT RUDD’S ENVIRONMENTAL BACKSLIDING

The Australian Greens have expressed alarm that Kevin Rudd is having secret discussions with at least one Liberal Premier about Australia’s environmental laws. This comes on top of apparent plans to hand big polluters billions by ending the carbon price fixed period early.

“In his Press Club address today, Kevin Rudd announced that he wanted to reduce the ‘regulatory impost’ on business by changing the environmental assessment process in Australia and that he had discussed this issue with Premier Barry O’Farrell,” said Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne.

“Premier O’Farrell is the Liberal Premier who did a toxic deal with the Shooters Party to allow shooting in National Parks.

“Australia needs stronger national environmental laws, not weaker ones in the hands of state governments.

“Labor recently rejected the Greens’ amendments to protect Australia’s environmental laws from Tony Abbott and Liberal state premiers.

“I urge the Prime Minister to reject the Business Council of Australia and Barry O’Farrell’s plans to hand over environmental powers to the states.

“The community wants strong national environmental laws that cannot be watered down by premiers chasing short term big business gains at the expense of the long term inherent and economic benefit in protecting Australia’s great wild and scenic environmental places.

“Weakening the carbon price by handing billions back to the big polluters and watering down environmental laws would be terrible for Australia’s long term interests.”
