The Tasmanian Greens today (Sun) welcomed Fairfax reports of the historic end to logging in forests nominated for inclusion in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said there was now a very strong chance that the forests would receive permanent protection through the formal World Heritage Committee process due to begin shortly in Phnom Penh.
“The chainsaws should now fall silent in some of the world’s most spectacular and carbon rich forests,” Mr McKim said.
“These are forests that environmentalists and the Greens have been campaigning for decades to save from the woodchipper.”
“They include key iconic tall eucalypt forests, significant karst systems and threatened species habitat in areas like the Styx, the Florentine and the Weld.”
“A successful nomination would be a huge step forward for the protection of our precious wild places, and would add value to our state’s tourism potential.”
