The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the passage of laws providing Tasmanian same sex couples with the same adoption rights as heterosexual couples.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said it was another positive step toward eliminating all legally entrenched discrimination against non-heterosexual Tasmanians.
“It’s a great day for all of those same couples in Tasmania who have wanted to adopt a child, but have been blocked by laws that enshrine homophobic discrimination,” Mr McKim said.
“The most important thing for children growing up is that they are raised in a house of love, and love does not discriminate.”
“The obvious next step is to provide same sex couples with the right to celebrate their love through marriage.”
“Many people consider marriage the bedrock on which a family is built, and it is simply unfair to deny same sex couples equal access to this fundamental civil institution.”
“The Greens would like to congratulate those MLCs who supported this important social justice reform.”
