The Tasmanian Greens today raised concerns over the death of two orange bellied parrots at a captive breeding facility in Tasmania’s south.
Greens Environment spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said the Minster for the Environment Brian Wightman had today provided details of the incident in response to a question from Greens MP, Paul O’Halloran.
“The orange bellied parrot is perched at the brink of extension, and this breeding program is critical to the survival of this treasured species,” Ms O’Connor said.
“With so few orange bellied parrots remaining in the wild, the life of every single bird is precious.”
“There is some incredible work being done to ensure the survival of the orange bellied parrot in Tasmania, and the Greens commend everybody involved in the program.”
“If we are going to put the effort and resources into a breeding program, then it’s important to ensure that the security and staffing are adequate.”
“We do welcome the swift action to fix these issues, but this incident does demonstrate why we cannot leave anything to chance to secure the survival of this endemic species.”
