The Tasmanian Greens today urged the Tasmanian community to get behind Jelly Baby Month and help to support those suffering from juvenile diabetes, and their families.
Greens Health spokesperson Paul O’Halloran MP said Jelly Baby Month was aimed at raising funds for type-one juvenile diabetes, and clearing up some of the misconception and stigma surrounding the disease.
“Type-one diabetes has no known cause or cure and cannot be prevented,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“Diabetes is often thought of as being a condition related to obesity, high sugar intake and lifestyle related causes, which is sometimes the case with type-two diabetes.”
“This can lead to a perception that type one juvenile diabetes is a result of lifestyle choices or poor parenting practices.”
“This misunderstanding can lead to embarrassment, guilt and upset for both the sufferers and their parents and make an already difficult road, more so.”
“The Greens are urging all Tasmanians to get behind Jelly Baby Month and support all efforts to raise awareness and funds for juvenile diabetes.”
