Triabunna left waiting
The Tasmanian Greens today voiced their concern over the failure of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to satisfactorily deal with serious odour pollution occurring at a fish processing plant in Triabunna.
Greens Member for Lyons Tim Morris MP said that that that there has been significant and various environmental problems associated with the Seafish Tasmania processing plant at Triabunna.
“The latest complaints about the stench emitting from the factory became public in December last year and it has taken the EPA six months to complete its investigation and still the problems exist which is totally unfair on the local community,” said Mr Morris.
“Whilst it is recognised that the factory is a major employer in the area, it is no excuse to not act to reduce the odour emissions to a satisfactory level.”
“Under the planning scheme the factory is a level two operation and as such it is the responsibility of the EPA to make sure that it is brought into compliance with its permit conditions.”
“It’s disappointing that it has taken so long for the EPA to assess this problem which is having a prolonged, negative impact on the residents and visitors of Triabunna, now it is time for it to ensure the problems are addressed as soon as practicable.”
“This issue is causing unnecessary tension in a community that naturally wants to support its local businesses but is having to accommodate an unacceptable and unnecessary symptom of what should be a tidy operation.”
“Seafish has acknowledged the problem by apologising to residents, the EPA has acknowledged that lack of odour capture, and treatment equipment could prevent the problem and yet the people of Triabunna are still waiting.”
