TASMANIAN Burma Railway survivor Arch Flanagan has died at the age of 98.
The father of six — including acclaimed authors Martin and Richard and human rights champion Jo — died yesterday.
The self-effacing Mr Flanagan endured the worst that life could hand out as a co-sufferer with Edward “Weary” Dunlop on the Burma Railway and during other prisoner-of-war horrors.
After World War II, Mr Flanagan married his sweetheart, Helen, and became a teacher at various schools around Tasmania.
Never one to spend his days crying into his beer and lamenting the bad luck to be caught up in the ghastly PoW experience, he once told the Mercury: “You get on with life but never entirely forget the awful years.”
Funeral details have yet to be finalised.
