The Tasmanian Greens today thanked the outgoing Children’s Commissioner Aileen Ashford for her outstanding advocacy on behalf of Tasmania’s young people.

Greens Children’s spokesperson Paul O’Halloran, who chaired the Child Protection Committee, said Ms Ashford had been a source of intelligent and invaluable advice on child welfare.

“Although I am disappointed to hear that Ms Ashford is moving on, I want to express my deep gratitude for her outstanding work on behalf of children in Tasmania and to wish her well for the future,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“Ms Ashford has been a true advocate for Tasmania’s children, particularly those who are from underprivileged backgrounds.”

“Ms Ashford is a person who fundamentally sees the best in children, and during her work with the Ashley Youth Detention Centre she was committed to ensuring vulnerable young people get a hand up.”

“I worked very closely with Ms Ashford throughout the Child Protection Committee process, and found her door was always open whenever I needed advice.”

“She has been a tireless worker, who studied widely about best practice models from around the world and her judgement was always well informed and strongly evidence-based.”

“She has been an outstanding advocate for children in this state and she will be very sadly missed,” said Mr O’Halloran.
