Tasmania’s farmers today welcomed progress being made on the $104 million Midlands Water Scheme that should see its water delivered to farms from Campbell Town to Kempton by the first half of next year.

Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association chief executive Jan Davis said the scheme, Tasmania’s biggest, would secure the future of, potentially, one of the state’s most productive agricultural corridors.

“Midland farmers have joined private investors in this, putting their money where their mouth is,” Ms Davis said.

“It’s one of the most public areas of farming, along the Midland Highway, so people will be able to watch the revolution that irrigation will bring.

“This can be another Coal River valley and hopefully it will rejuvenate once-vibrant communities neighbouring the highway,” Ms Davis said.
