Too many staff on the government payroll could be embarrassing for the government as public servants are often considered to be lazy and overpaid.
Lara Giddings claims 27,000. The State Service Commissioner says 29,000. In fact, there are 33,000 on the public teat when GBE and statutory bodies are included.
Lara Giddings told Parliament yesterday “that…as a result of our strong budget management, we can now rule out forced redundancies and provide certainty for our 27,000 public servants.”

State Service Commissioner’s 2012 Annual Report – page 56 ‘As at 30 June 2012, there was a paid headcount of 27,451 people appointed under the Act, excluding casual and sessional employees. The paid headcount for casual employees was 1,251 and there were no sessional employees.’ This is a total of 28,702 employees.
