Marriage equality has joined forestry as a defining issue in Tasmania’s upcoming Legislative Council elections after Murchison MLC Ruth Forrest vowed to bring the Same Sex Marriage Bill back for debate, Greens candidate for Nelson Tom Baxter said today.

“This raises hopes that same sex couples could soon marry here in Tasmania, with their families and friends. But those hopes will again be cruelly dashed by the Upper House, without its renewal,” Mr Baxter said.

“The Upper House last year squandered a golden opportunity to let Tasmania lead Australia on marriage equality. For it to repeat last year’s 6 to 8 vote defeat would add insult to injury.

“But that very slim margin puts change within reach since MLCs in Nelson, Pembroke and Montgomery, the three seats to be decided on 4 May, opposed the Same Sex Marriage Bill 2012. While Upper House President Sue Smith did not vote, her retirement may also see a supporter of the bill elected in Montgomery.

“We need a circuit-breaker and the May 4 elections provide that opportunity for Tasmania to lead the nation as a beacon of equality.

“If elected on May 4 I will vote for marriage equality.

“It’s the right thing to do and would strengthen relationships and families, as UK PM David Cameron recognised.

“I will also work to resolve the Upper House impasse on a whole range of other issues vital to Tasmania’s future, including the long-overdue restructure of our forest industry.”
