Two Tasmanian ladies are being hailed as diabetes heroes and are being offered the opportunity
to represent Australia as youth leaders at the World Diabetes Congress to be held later this year
in Melbourne.
Stephanie Cesile and Tahlia McDermott had just returned from a cycle challenge covering over
400km in South-East Asia, where they helped raise more than $35,000 for Diabetes Tasmania,
when they were told the news.
Diabetes Tasmania CEO Caroline Wells said she was extremely proud of the leadership potential
we had in Tasmania, especially in helping the youth of the State understand and manage their
diabetes.
“These self-motivated ladies are role models for all young Tasmanians, especially those with
diabetes and we wish them both the best for their selection,” Ms Wells said.
“The World Diabetes Congress is a gathering of all the best minds to focus on diabetes
treatment, research, management and prevention.
“Stephanie and Tahlia, if selected, will be making a contribution to discussions surrounding
diabetes with delegates from across the world as well as bringing new knowledge back to apply
in Tasmania.
“This challenge will give them the opportunity to represent Australia at the International
Diabetes Federation’s World Diabetes Congress and will see them learn more about youth
leadership, engagement as well as strategies for young people.”
The World Diabetes Congress will be held between 2 – 6 December in Melbourne and is open to
the public.
