After sustained pressure from the Greens, the Independents and the community, federal responsibility to protect water resources from coal seam gas mining, has been passed through the Lower House today.
“The Greens are thrilled that by working with Independent MP Tony Windsor we have strengthened the government’s protection for water resources from the impacts of coal seam gas by ensuring the impacts are assessed at a federal level, even under an Abbott government.
“Mr Windsor’s amendment, which has the full support of the Greens, prevents Mr Abbott from his plan to hand responsibility for this new protection to the state governments, who have let the coal seam gas industry run rampant.
“Today we’ve come a long way toward locking the gate and Abbott-proofing the fence.
“The achievement has only been made possible through the dedication of the strong community campaign, led by the Lock the Gate Alliance, in voicing the serious concerns of the communities that rely on our precious groundwater.
“The Greens look forward to proudly passing this Abbott-proofed protection for water resources from coal seam gas mining, which reflects our long-term policy position, through the Senate,” Senator Waters said.
