Hundreds of bike riders are expected to turn out at 3pm this Sunday on the second Sandy Bay Road Family Fun Ride. Gathering at the grassy area at Marieville Esplanade and Sandy Bay Road, riders of all ages and abilities will ride in long conga line to Long Beach park for a free community BBQ and prize-giving.

No additional bike infrastructure has been built since the first Sandy Bay Road Family Fun Ride in February 2011. This second ride is to remind decision-makers that active transport is increasingly important for people to build in exercise to overfull schedules.

‘Many people ask me about what is happening. They want Sandy Bay Road to be less stressful for getting to work, shops and sport. It’s a key arterial road. It’s relatively flat, scenic and gets people where they need to go.’ said Bicycle Tasmania spokesperson Emma Pharo.

The focus is on people who won’t currently use Sandy Bay Road. Passing between parked cars and high speed traffic requires a high tolerance of stress or a particular level of bravery and fitness.
Provision for active transport requires strong political decisions to change from the focus on car movement and parking.

‘We’ve invited local, state and federal politicians to address the gathering and put their perspective.’ said Ms Pharo. Confirmed attendees include Andrew Wilkie, Anna Reynolds, Elise Archer and Helen Burnet. Tom Baxter, who is challenging incumbent Jim Wilkinson for the seat of Nelson, will speak about the importance of active transport.

‘Our health funding situation dictates that people who want to get out of their cars and walk or ride at least part of their journey need to be supported.’ said Emma Pharo

‘Everyone can come and try part of the proposed Sandy Bay Walking and Cycling Project route in a supported way this Sunday.’ said MsPharo.

‘We are asking all decision makers for more timely and stronger support, and in particular Hobart City Council aldermen because the ball is currently in their court.’

The next step in the proposal is an aldermanic workshop to discuss design options. The December workshop was delayed until Feb 27th and has been delayed again until some time in March.
