Liberal Senator Richard Colbeck welcomed the agreement of the Senate today to inquire into the citrus industry in Australia.
“The intent of this inquiry is to have a constructive look at the industry,” Senator Colbeck said.
To achieve this broad terms of reference have been established.
The inquiry will consider:
• scale and structure of the industry
• opportunities and inhibitors for growth of the Australian industry
• competition issues in the Australian market
• adequacy and efficiency of supply chains in the Australian market
• opportunities and inhibitors for export and export growth
• any related matters
Senator Colbeck said, “We continue to hear of the many problems facing the citrus industry – imported concentrate, fruit left unpicked and the difficulty of market access to name a few.”
“The inquiry will look at all these but we also want to look for solutions – what are the opportunities and how can they be achieved.”
“We invite industry to participate in the process and hope the inquiry can play a part in achieving a positive future for Australia’s citrus industry,” Senator Colbeck said.
