The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) has alerted farmers to the fact that a total fire ban has been declared today for the northern and southern regions of Tasmania; and reminded them that, during a period of a total fire ban, they should not use any machinery that may cause a spark that could ignite a blaze.
“That includes harvesters or other machinery that could strike a rock in the ground and create a spark,” TFGA chief executive Jan Davis said.
“Under the declaration of a total fire ban, it can be a criminal offence to use machines or apparatus that may cause a spark or flame in the open air.
“This includes grinding, cutting and welding, and any other hot work practice. However, in some circumstances, it can also apply to machinery in the field, including harvesters,” Ms Davis said.
“The devastating fires since Christmas have reminded us all of how dangerous the current dry conditions are. I know our farmers are aware of fire risks and will think carefully when going about their daily farming business.”
