The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association today welcomed the extension of bushfire relief funding to cover the Central Highlands and the Derwent Valley, for which it had been arguing.
Yesterday the federal and state governments announced that farmers in those areas affected by the Lake Repulse fire would also be eligible to apply for so-called Category C grants of up to $25,000 under the jointly-funded Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
Those grants help with the cost of cleaning up and removing debris, disposing of dead livestock and helping to ensure business isn’t disrupted beyond the next season. It does not compensate for income losses and is not intended to replace insurance.
“This is a great outcome for those farmers, who were ineligible initially,” TFGA president David Gatenby said today.
“We applaud both governments for their efforts in securing this much needed funding support for badly affected farmers in these areas.
“Any farmers wanting to know more can contact the TFGA.”
