Southern Waste Solutions, a community owned Local Government Authority is simply doing what it is charged to do by working to safely dispose the community’s fire debris from the devastating fires that hit the south of the state earlier this month.
Fire debris is classified as controlled waste and would ideally be deposited in a C cell. However, as such a facility is not yet available in Tasmania we are working to safely dispose of the community’s fire debris in its existing B cell.
In addition to this, Southern Waste Solutions has been assisting the community with a number of fire related services and facilities where appropriate and for no charge.
Although the landfill was in the direct path of the fire on Friday 4 January 2013 its infrastructure and mobile plant were not significantly damaged. Minor damage was incurred, such as to fencing along the site access road. This fact demonstrates that the site’s fire plans are robust and work well.
Leachate levels were not affected by the fire, and no leachate contamination occurred.
Like all Tasmanians, we were shocked by the stories of devastation in the community and despite the somewhat conspiratorial claims by others, we are not seeking to exploit this situation, but simply get on with our job managing a best practice landfill site for the betterment of all Tasmanians.
