The Tasmanian Greens today condemned those responsible for the latest trashing of the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, and called on the Minister for the Environment to guarantee firm enforcement measures are in place to prevent further damage.

Greens Member for Braddon Paul O’Halloran MP said the Arthur Pieman Management Committee reported on the 5th of December 2012 that hoons had damaged the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area the previous weekend.

“There has been extensive damage by vehicles to the Sandy Cape campground and along closed tracks, as well as damage to trees from chainsaws, paperbark trees knocked over and burnt, and fencing destroyed.”

“Vehicles were also reported to have driven above the high water line potentially damaging where many threatened or endangered birds nest.”

“This kind of behaviour is sadly all too common, and if we are going to let off road vehicle users continue to use this area, we need strong action to prevent this type of senseless vandalism.”

“The argument that it is only the 5% of irresponsible users who do the most damage is no justification for allowing it to continue.”

“The Greens want a guarantee from the Minister that there will be firm enforcement measures and in place for this season to identify and prosecute hoons and eco-vandals.”

“This area is home to a number of critically endangered species, unique ecosystems and some of Australia’s most remarkable Aboriginal heritage.”

“If we continue to allow off road vehicles to smash up this the area, then it won’t be around for the enjoyment of future generations.”

“These irresponsible hoons are giving the majority who are responsible a bad name.”
