The latest revelation of animal cruelty (Arutz Sheva, here) to what are apparently Australian cattle exported to Israel makes an utter mockery of the Government’s efforts to convince us it has cleaned up the live animal export industry.
The scenes aired on 7.30 last night were as horrific as any we have seen in recent years.
Torture is the only word to properly describe the treatment being meted out to the beasts.
Australia’s live export trade is barbaric and not in the country’s economic self-interest.
Nor does it have popular support.
It’s way beyond time for the Government to stop kowtowing to the industry and instead to start caring about animal welfare and public opinion.
Effective safeguards must be put in place immediately and the trade stopped as soon as possible.
