Tasmanian Gold Coast Medal Grab

14 competitors from Southern ITF Taekwon-Do (based in Hobart) competed today in the ITF Taekwon-Do 2012 National Championships at Carrara on the Gold Coast. The team, in keeping with its impressive performance at the Oceania Championships held in Hobart in April, have taken out 24 medals (8 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze) in Patterns Sparring, Special Events and Power Breaking (medal tally below).

“The juniors, Jasper Rigg and Dana Gillies set the bar for the Tasmanian Team early with Jasper winning gold in special techniques and Dana winning gold in sparring in the morning events”. Said Wayne Fehlberg, Senior Coach and 3rd Degree Black Belt.

“The Tasmanian Team performed impressively given the conditions on the day with temperatures in the stadium in excess of 30° C.” said VIth degree Senior Instructor from Southern ITF Taekwon-Do, Mr Steve Weston.

In the afternoon events Gabrielle Anastasio won gold in patterns; Sam Bird and Matt levis both took gold in the power breaking; Josh and Jess Rowland both won silver in sparring. Matthew Gillies won silver in the sparring and Gilbert Gillies won bronze in the sparring. Alex MacIntyre, Sam Thomas and Josh Rowland each won three medals.

In preparation for the Championships the team has been in competition training for the last 8 weeks. “Their final training session was held at Ashmore yesterday afternoon where the competitors completed a workout, practicing patterns and sparring routines.

Mr Steve Weston, Senior Instructor of Southern ITF Taekwon-Do was responsible for organising referees for the Event and setting the standards for the particular disciplines as Umpiring Director for the National Association.

Head Coach; Wayne Fehlberg (3rd degree BB), and Coach; Joanne Van Emmerik (2nd Degree BB) supported the team in their preparation leading up to the event and were on hand today to ensure competitors were performing at their peak.
