Tasmanians should prepare to be grooved, moved and amused next year by an hand-picked array of
world-leading musicians, who will travel from different corners of the northern hemisphere to perform at
12 locations throughout the State during Ten Days on the Island in March.
Ten Days Artistic Director Jo Duffy announced today that the festival will include the world’s best-loved folk
musician Dougie MacLean from Scotland, the world-leading a capella choir A Filetta from Corsica, and the
insanely fun and beyond lively Cape Breton Island band Sprag Session, who will perform their unique style of
contemporary Celtic tunes.
“These musicians are truly some of the world’s finest, and their shows will add to the transformative festival
feel as they reach each of our 10 Festival Towns around the State and even on Flinders Island,” Ms Duffy said.
“Dougie MacLean is a Scottish legend, who has been described as a musical hero and performer of
extraordinary warmth and ease, A Filetta are the undisputed masters of polyphonic singing with a captivating
stage presence and sound, while Sprag Session will round off the international musical performances with
genuine appeal for ages 8 to 80.”
Other festival highlights announced today included Little Big Shots – an international film festival for kids
playing in nine locations, 21 Circus Acts in 20 Minutes – a crazy, chaotic, mad-capped caper for the whole
family playing in 10 towns, a selection of curated visual arts exhibitions across the State, and THINKtent, which
will provide Tasmanians with the opportunity to slow down and reconnect within our community.
“Ten Days on the Island 2013 will be a Statewide international arts festival for everyone, with arts and cultural
events for families seeking vibrancy and fun, for people overwhelmed with the pace of modern living looking to
retreat, and for people seeking new experiences with inspiring visual and performing arts,” Ms Duffy said.
“Ten Days is committed to not only bringing the best artists in the world to Tasmania but we are dedicated to
sharing those artists with all Tasmanians, touring them to towns as distant as Queenstown and St Helens,
Huonville and Burnie. We have the have the courage, the conviction, the professionalism, the reputation and the
support to make this calibre of performance conceivable right across Tasmania.
“Locally, we have home-grown arts projects like THINKtent, which offers participants a chance to take a break
from the choppy, inane conversations that populate social media and everyday chatter, and instead connect
through real conversations in a beautiful, welcoming space.”
A diverse range of visual arts experiences were also announced today and include Felt Presence – an exhibition
by Tasmanian, Scottish and Irish artists; Hemisphere Travellers by artist Katherine Cooper who has taken
inspiration from the Shetland Islands, Three Hummock Island and King Island; Into the Wild, showing the work
of trail-blazing wilderness photographers, artists and naturalists of Tasmania who are now are global legends;
the best in contemporary printmaking with the Burnie Print Prize; and Tasmania Today: An Island State
profiling incredibly diverse hive of creative visual artists working in a range of mediums who are the cultural
barometer of this island state.
