In May 2006 the Tasmanian devil was listed as a vulnerable species under the Commonwealth EPBC Act.
That’s 6 years ago.
One would expect that such a globally recognised endangered species would have an approved Recovery Plan considering the generous funding available and the dedicated Save the Tasmanan Devil Program staff.
However, the plan is still in its draft format after more than 3 years.
People often think that devil habitat is offered protection over and above other less threatened native species in Tasmania – yet this is not the case.
Forestry Tasmania is required to have operational procedures in place to protect and manage listed threatened species on forestry managed land as part of the Tasmanian RFA.
Yet these operational procedures do not formally exist and therefore no procedures are in place to formally protect Tasmanian devil dens and habitat anywhere in Tasmania.
Sets a bad example, don’t you think?
