Giving people living with a mental illness a greater voice

Launch of Advisory Groups giving people living with a mental illness a greater voice

CEO of Australia’s first National Mental Health Commission, Robyn Kruk AM, attended the launch of Tasmania’s Regional Advisory Groups today (Tuesday 28 August 2012 at 2.30pm) in the Wellington Room, Mercure Hobart, 156 Bathurst Street, Hobart.

Robyn said she was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet with people with a lived experience, their families and support people and to attend the launch of these important new groups. “A key role for the Commission is to engage with people with a lived experience, their families and other support people on s on what’s working, where the gaps are, and where we can improve.” I am looking forward to meeting with members as well as other people with a lived experience and hearing about issues and concerns that are affecting them.”

Dennis Betts (OAM), Chair of Flourish who launched the groups said “Flourish aims to provide a strong voice for mental health consumers in Tasmania to ensure their views are paramount when mental health policy is developed. Through the three Regional Advisory Groups in the North West, the North and the South, people with a lived experience of mental health issues will have a forum to have direct input into the way mental health policy and services are developed and delivered across Tasmania and Australia.

The Executive Officer of Flourish, Miranda Ashby added “Regional Advisory Group members will bring experience and knowledge of their respective experiences; a willingness to share information and a desire to comment on and influence social and health policy, service development and implementation. Flourish will provide administrative assistance, and training and development support where required. We are really excited about the future, and can’t wait to see people with the lived experience continue to make a difference in our state.”
