Kingborough Council and Tasmanian Conservation Trust (TCT) are pleased to announce the
appointment of Meg Lorang as the new Kingborough Cat Management Officer.
Kingborough Council has funded this position for the last two years and is pleased to have
provided another $10,000 in the Council’s 2012-13 budget to maintain this important project.
Council provides the project funding and Tasmanian Conservation Trust employs Meg for
two days per week.
Kingborough Mayor Dr Graham Bury said cats can be great pets and lovely companions but
if not cared for sensibly can be can also be destroyers of small native mammals and birds if
allowed to roam far from their home.
The Tasmanian Conservation Trust congratulated Kingborough Council for its continued
support of this project and looks forward to working with Meg and the Council to set an
example for other communities.
TCT Director Peter McGlone said that “This funding could not have come at a better time
with the Cat Management Act being proclaimed on 1 July 2012 so Meg can assist cat owners
in Kingborough to understand their new responsibilities under the legislation.
The appointment of the new Kingborough Cat Management Officer also coincides with
National De-sexing Month and Meg strongly encourages Kingborough residents to take
advantage of cut price de-sexing by taking their cat to one of the three participating vets in
Hobart.
“I strongly encourage all cat owners to have their cat de-sexed because it is good for your
cat’s health and makes it a better pet. Importantly, it also stops more kittens being born when
sadly there are already more unwanted kittens than homes for them,” she said.

Meg is currently researching whether a de-sexing discount incentive program will work to
help the more reluctant or less well-off in the community do the right thing by their pet cat.
An education program to teach cat owners how to be responsible for their pet will be
scheduled in the future.
