Complaints appear to be growing as the roll-out of solar panels in Tasmania reaches a frenetic level.
The complaints relate to advertising claims which the complainants say are far from reality.
One complaint seen by Tasmanian Times is from an elderly Tasmanian resident contacted by phone (apparently from Melbourne).
The customer was told that 16 x 190 w panels plus a 5 kw inverter for just under ($5896) would significantly negate his annual bill for power of $2600.
But another expert assessment concluded that on the resident’s north-west facing roof he would get some 15% less gain than true north at premium alignment = $778 p.a.
This assessment concluded that a different top-quality 10-panel set-up would create $767; based on local case study proven data and backed up by customer results ($6210 with a 3kw inverter or $7917 with 5 kw inverter (after rebate).
The ACCC complaint that is confirmed as lodged from Tasmania concerns a national company and its media campaigns since January through March; the complaint alleges false and misleading advertising.
One supplier contacted by Tasmanian Times said:
“The yield from a system per kw p.a. as should be provided with any quote and normally given north facing at premium angle and at the latitude also. At least proven case study date is really the superior data.
“If you are buying a car you want litres per km to compare performance because all 4 cylinder cars are not equal etc; just like all 5 kw systems with 26 x 190 w panels are not equal.
“The also one must decide on quality, durability etc. i.e. if you are going to go 4wd driving for years in the outback etc, is an old ute the same as a Toyota Landcruiser!”
