ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards 2011 Finalists

Anticipation intensifies as the Stage III KEYBOARD FINAL approaches in the 2012 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards. Four exceptional young musicians will compete in this concert on 5 July for a $5000 cash prize and a place in the Grand Final.

The ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards has encouraged rising talent since it began in 1944. The competition provides inspiration and valuable exposure for gifted young people embarking on a classical music career.

On Thursday 5 July at Hobart’s Federation Concert Hall, four impressive young pianists will compete in the Stage III KEYBOARD Final. The winner will go on to join the winners of the STRINGS and OTHER INSTRUMENTS categories to perform in the Grand Final in Perth with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra on 4 October 2012.

Highly awarded Sydney born pianist Tony Lee, aged 20, will perform the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 in Bb minor. Jeremy So, 21, an honours student at the Sydney Conservatorium, will perform the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3 in C. Award winning Queensland pianist John Fisher, 28, will perform the Liszt Totentanz and Young Kwon Choi, 26, who won his first national piano competition at the age of six, will perform the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor.

The competition’s Grand Final winner will be named the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year and will also be awarded $20,000 cash, multiple copies of a CD of their winning performance and opportunities for further performances with Australia’s major symphony orchestras.

Many of Australia’s renowned classical musicians have launched careers on the platform of the Young Performer Awards. Simon Tedeschi, Diana Doherty, Claire Edwardes and Roger Woodward are among those who have risen to prominence by means of this extraordinary opportunity.

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marc Taddei, will host the Keyboards category on Thursday 5 July, 7.30pm in the Federation Concert Hall in Hobart.
