Environment Tasmania delivered over 1300 postcards to the Premier on this World Oceans Day calling on her to protect Tasmania’s magnificent and unique marine life.
“World Oceans Day is a day to celebrate the incredible beauty, value and potential of our oceans.” said Jed Watson of Environment Tasmania.
Earlier this year, Environment Tasmania released a report (Here) by Dr Karen Parsons showing that Tasmania is a global hotspot for marine biodiversity and has extraordinarily high numbers of unique species and rare ecosystems, found nowhere else on Earth.
“Our unique and important marine life forms the basis of a very special relationship between Tasmanians and their coasts and oceans,” said Peter Skillern, CEO of Environment Tasmania.
“Yet this marine life cannot look after itself. The pressures of fishing, pests, pollution and climate change are overwhelming, yet just 1% of our coastal waters are protected, compared to around 40% of our land environment” said Mr Skillern.
“Today we are delivering a net full of over 1300 postcards to the Premier, urging her to protect this unique and wondrous marine life, and help to also secure a sustainable future for our fisheries and tourism industries that depend on them,” said Mr Watson.
