I sensed a seismic shift in the position of many Aldermen at the last Council meeting.
Out of it came in principle support for the entire Sandy Bay Cycleway project.
This is something the Greens have been consistently advocating for, and now Hobart has a commitment from its Council.
This is very good news, not only for children and adults using bikes to safely commute to and from their homes to schools or work, or to university, Sandown Park or any number of great destinations.
It has many flow-on benefits to the health of the city with fewer car emission. It also allows for a safe, healthy alternative for those who’d sooner hop on their bikes to get to the city from Taroona, UTAS or even the beach. The tourism potential is significant as cycling options for travellers are sought after.
The bold stance from Council helps deliver better road safety in general right through to Taroona for all road users, including pedestrians.
The Greens put the positon to Council that we were far better to be “shovel ready” for this cycleway proposal if we were to be successful in attracting federal money to make this a reality.
All road users should be safe and feel respected. This Sandy Bay cycleway project is a real oppportunity to provide cycling and walking as a viable means of transport.
