DEAN OF HOBART SEEKS TO EXPAND THE MARRIAGE DEBATE
The Anglican Dean of Hobart, the Very Reverend Richard Humphrey, will be using this week’s Friday Forum to expand the marriage debate.
The title of the forum is the deliberately provocative claim that Marriage is Discriminatory.
Dean Humphrey comments, “Marriage is discriminatory. Marriage is a profound action that discriminates against selfishness and empty romanticism for the sake of others.”
“The debate has been reduced to the question of redefining marriage in terms of gender and sexuality. It has become a debate about what marriage isn’t. We have forgotten to talk about what marriage actually is.”
“As a society we must affirm every aspect of marriage. A married life together is more than just a post-wedding experience. All-of-life commitment is far more important than the popular emphasis on self-centred desires and whims.”
“Marriage discriminates because we discriminate against ourselves for the sake of our spouse, for the sake of our children, for the sake of our community.
“The Friday Forum is a place where we can talk about these matters. I will share my own thoughts and experience from a Christian perspective. I encourage people to come along, ask questions, and converse with one another. We can not only continue the discussion but also deepen and broaden it.”
This Friday Forum with Richard Humphrey will take place this Friday, March 16, from 1pm to 2pm at St. David’s Cathedral, on the corner of Murray and Macquarie Streets.
The Friday Forum occurs regularly at St. David’s Cathedral. The Forum seeks to provide insight and engagement with regard to topical issues from a Christian perspective. Recent topics have included euthanasia, poker machine reform, and human rights in the Middle East. The Friday Forum page at http://saintdavids.org.au/ has more detail.
Dean Humphrey will be available for interview by appointment on Wednesday March 14, or following the Forum on March 16.
