In June 2010 the State Government charged the Tasmanian Planning Commission with the task of carrying out the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Capital City Planning Project.
The Draft Hobart Capital City Plan is one part of the overarching Capital City Planning Project. The Project also requires the establishment of a ‘planning system’ to ensure that integrated and overarching planning is carried out across all aspects of State and local government activity in the greater Hobart city area.
The Commonwealth Government has required all State and Territory Governments to prepare overarching strategic plans for their capital cities so that there is a clear common set of short, medium and long term objectives in place to guide investment of all levels of government and the private sector. By requiring a Capital City Plan to be adopted the Commonwealth will be assured that all public expenditure is working towards the agreed long term vision for the city and reinforcing the identified strengths and future directions.
Have Your Say
The draft Hobart Capital City Plan 2011-2040 was prepared by the Office of the State Architect bringing together a range of current initiatives and setting out a long-term vision for Greater Hobart. These initiatives include the Southern Tasmanian Regional Land Use Strategy (prepared by the Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority), Hobart 2010 Public Spaces and Public Life – A City with People in Mind (the Gehl Report) and the Sullivans Cove Master Plan.
