A Coalition Government would honour $2.5 million commitment for emergency dredging of the Tamar River
Senator Stephen Parry and Federal Liberal Candidate for Bass, Mr Andrew Nikolic, said that on forming government the Coalition would provide $2.5 million for emergency dredging of the Tamar River.
“I am amazed at the comments made by the Federal Member for Bass, Mr Geoff Lyons, that he would not lobby his government for concurrent dredging of the Tamar, while longer-term solutions are explored,” said Mr Nikolic.
“The Tamar is the lifeblood of Launceston, the Tamar Valley and North-East Tasmania, with silt accumulation hurting regional recreation and tourism.”
“It is Labor’s inaction that continues to tarnish what should be an environmental jewel of Tasmania.”
“The Coalition will be guided by the recommendations of Launceston City Council’s 2009 report on Siltation. And at this point it appears the Launceston Council is still keen to have Federal and State government assistance”, Senator Parry said.
