Tasmania’s IGA retailers today demonstrated the true meaning of Christmas, donating $60,000 to a
range of local charities and community based organisations, in what has been hailed as one of the
State’s largest giving ceremonies.
The donation is part of the IGA network’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the communities who
support them, providing around $200,000 to the community sector in Tasmania every year.
Tasmanian Independent Retailers CEO Grant Hinchcliffe said the State’s 91 IGA outlets were
extremely proud to provide support to so many worthy organisations within their local communities.
“IGA retailers from the far reaches of Tasmania are supported by their local communities every day and
so it is important to us that in return we show our support for them,” Mr Hinchcliffe said.
Presentations made today included:
> $50,000 in grocery vouchers to help St Vincent de Paul, Hobart and Launceston City Missions,
Anglicare, Salvation Army and the Benevolent Society, who all provide vital services to those in
need, including food, warmth, shelter and comfort.
> $10,000 joint donation to Legacy and Camp Quality. Legacy provides personal support and
welfare to the dependents of Australia’s deceased veterans, while Camp Quality helps children
living with cancer.
Mr Hinchcliffe said community support from IGA members in 2011 had reached around $200,000 in
one of the largest public giving campaigns in the State.
“This amount is based on the donations and support provided by Tasmanian Independent Retailers on
behalf of its IGA retailer network and excludes the many thousands of dollars in additional support that
is provided on an almost daily basis by many individual retailers and small business operators that
trade under the IGA brand,” he said.
“Our members give back to their local communities because they are local businesses and they want
everyone to know if they shop local, the benefits are returned to them at a local level.”
Mr Hinchcliffe was joined today by representatives from Launceston and Hobart City Mission, St
Vincent’s de Paul Society, Salvation Army, Benevolent Society, Make A Wish Foundation, Legacy,
Camp Quality as well as Cerebral Palsy fundraiser Charles Seaman, all of whom were overwhelmed
with IGA’s generosity.
