Increase in Southern Bluefin Tuna quota welcome
Coalition Spokesman for Fisheries, Senator Richard Colbeck has welcomed the sensible science based decision to increase Southern Bluefin Tuna quota, by member nations of the Commission of the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna at a meeting of the Commission in Bali, last night.
“The increase is a testament to industry discipline, with science showing tuna stocks recovering, allowing for this quota increase.
“Under the new management plan the total allowable catch will increase by 1,000 metric tons for the next three years.
“Australia’s quota will increase to 4,528 metric tons next year.
“The increase in quota provides certainty for local employment and investment in this valuable export industry.
“This is good news in the face of predictable ENGO doomsday predictions, which continue despite the reality of the science showing recovery of stocks.” Senator Richard Colbeck said.
