Crikey.com founder shares insight with Tasmanian local government leaders

Posted on

The founder of Australia’s most well known ezine, Crikey.com, will today seek to inspire and motivate
Tasmanian council general and senior managers to think outside the square in their endeavors to
achieve good governance.

Stephen Mayne launched Crikey.com in 2000, which was described by former Federal Opposition Leader
Mark Latham as the ‘most popular website in Parliament House’ in The Latham Diaries.

The site has reported on unpopular opinions and broken stories not found in more mainstream media
outlets and now has 6,000 paying subscribers for the daily email and over 1.5 million page views every
month.

Mayne will address delegates on the final day of this year’s Local Government Managers Australia
(LGMA) Tasmanian Annual Conference on Why Good Governance Matters to Local Government.
Mayne won the Walkley Award for business journalism in 1999 for a 16-part series from the perspective
of an active shareholder when he was business editor of The Daily Telegraph. He also worked for News
Corporation newspapers for seven years as a business reporter, business editor and chief of staff.

In addition to his career in the field of journalism, Mayne has had the experience of serving as Councillor
at the City of Manningham in Melbourne since 2008, he is also a regular media commentator on
corporate governance issues and is a member of the board of the Australian Shareholders’ Association.

Also speaking at the conference today will be the Honorable Murray Kellam, Chief Commissioner of the
Integrity Commission and local business owner Kate Bradley, of Kate’s Berry Farm in Swansea.

The 2011 Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) Tasmania Annual Conference, Communication
and Collaboration, began on Wednesday and will conclude this afternoon.
