TAXPAYERS will pay salaries equivalent to three Royal Hobart Hospital CEOs as the State Government recruits the hospital’s 10th chief in less than 10 years.
Former CEO Michael Pervan will keep his $200,000-a-year pay packet when he is shifted into the newly created position of executive director, commissioning, at the hospital.
He joins former hospital CEO Craig White who also maintained his salary when moved into the role of chief health officer in 2008 a job created especially for him. Neither position was advertised.
The expansion of the senior executive ranks of the hospital comes as the Government attempts to cut $100 million from its health budget in part by closing beds and axing front-line services.
Liberal health spokesman Jeremy Rockliff said the department’s priorities were wrong.
“It’s farcical that we will have three people being paid a CEO’s wage when there is only one CEO needed at the Royal Hobart Hospital,” Mr Rockliff said.
