Hobart Greens aldermen Bill Harvey and Philip Cocker have welcomed the announcement by Housing Minister Cassy O’Connor of the tender for the construction of a 35 unit $6.2 million, 6 star housing project in Brisbane St.
Alderman Harvey believes the project is a much needed and important addition to the city and will generate a number of benefits including employment during construction and more customers to support local businesses when completed.
He believes that projects such as these are vital to the success of the city, as they help increase inner city population density and diversity of housing options.
“Increasing the density, social mix and variety of inner city housing is well recognised as essential to creating a more vibrant, sustainable and people friendly city,” said alderman Harvey.
Adding that, “the project not only provides much needed housing, but provides housing in the right place, close to services, transport and education and employment opportunities.“
Alderman Cocker believes that an increased population density will be beneficial to existing local businesses and new ones such as an inner city supermarket being constructed by Sultan Holdings.
Alderman Cocker said that the project aligns well with the Greens philosophy of creating more active and people friendly cities and reducing the need to drive.
The Greens Aldermen believe the project supports Hobart City Council’s philosophy and direction to revitalise the inner city through its Inner City Development Plan, and that it also compliments the councils Affordable Housing Strategy and Social Inclusion Policy.
