Independent Senator for South Australia, Nick Xenophon, Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, and GetUp! today launched a radio advertisement to campaign against the live export of cattle to Indonesia.
“My office has been inundated with hundreds of emails and phone calls since the shocking truth of what happens in Indonesian slaughterhouses was revealed on Four Corners on Monday night,” Nick said. “And I dare say that the Government – and the Opposition – has received the same response.”
“And yet even today, we understand three container ships of Australian livestock are set to depart for Indonesia.”
“The Government needs to put an end to these horrific practices immediately,” Nick said.
The advertisement calls for Australians to join the campaign against live exports, with over 120,000 Australians already having signed up to the GetUp! petition.
The advertisement is available for download at www.getup.org.au/liveexportad
“The Government must today stop the boats being readied to carry more cattle to Indonesia. And it must move quickly to stop all future shipments to that country and to wind up the entire live animal export industry within 3 years,” Andrew said.
“The Government’s failure to immediately ban all live animal exports to Indonesia shows outrageous disregard for animal welfare and contempt for the overwhelming public demand for a moratorium,” Andrew said.
Senator Xenophon and Mr Wilkie will introduce mirror legislation into both houses of Parliament on Monday 20 June, calling for the immediate ban on live animal exports to Indonesia and a full ban of live animal exports within 3 years.
